Gopher basketball assistant coach Saul Smith plead guilty to driving while intoxicated Friday at his arraignment in Hennepin County.

Smith, son of head coach Tubby Smith, was sentenced to 40 hours of community service, a one-day DWI program, and fines that total close to $400.

Smith blew a .18 after being pulled over for speeding on Oct. 20 and is on leave with the team until next Tuesday.

Freshman Athletic Director Norwood Teague decided not to fire Smith, but he described the situation as “embarrassing.”
