Banham leads Gophers to Best Buy Classic title

Marilyn Indahl-US PRESSWIRE

The men’s basketball season opener at home Friday night was perhaps just an opening act for Rachel Banham and the women’s team.

Banham and the Gophers won the Best Buy Classic at Williams Arena this weekend, beating Washington State and Villanova.

On Saturday, the sophomore point guard scored 34 points while playing 46 minutes in a 87-83 double overtime season opener win against the Washington State Cougars.

The following day, Banham scored 13 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, helping her team beat Villanova 75-60.

But it was Saturday’s game that had people talking.

Banham scored 26 points in the second half and overtimes while making key free throws to put the game out of reach once and for all.

Minnesota’s next game is on Nov. 17 at home in the Subway Classic where they will face Ohio.
