The border battle with the University of Wisconsin has been heated for a number of years. More so probably in other sports than with women’s volleyball, but that hasn’t stopped Gophers head coach Hugh McCutcheon from stirring the pot.

It was announced today the University of Minnesota women’s volleyball team received a signed National Letter of Intent from Eden Prairie, Minn. outside hitter Sarah Wilhite. The senior at Eden Prairie High School brought her team to a runner-up finish at the Class AAA state high school volleyball tournament just two weeks ago.

The 6-foot, 1-inch winner of the 2012 Ms. Volleyball Award for the state had originally committed to the Badgers prior to her junior season. Today’s NLI signing comes at one of the highest points for McCutcheon and the Gophers, as the team is currently ranked No. 11 in Division I women’s volleyball.

Coming off two home wins this past weekend against unranked Iowa and then No. 9 Nebraska, this Minnesota team is heading in the right direction as they are just two weekends away from the start of the NCAA playoffs.

It is expected that Wilhite will join the Maroon and Gold as a freshmen in the fall of 2013.
