Former Golden Gopher pitcher Glen Perkins has been selected to participate in the World Baseball Classic for Team USA.

Perkins, a Stillwater, Minn. native, will join fellow Minnesota Twin Joe Mauer on the roster.

According to Phil Mackey of 1500 ESPN, Perkins received the news from the team manager Joe Torre over the telephone.

Selected 22nd overall in 2004 by the Twins, Perkins has started more than 40 games in his career but has also pitched as a reliever. He has a 26-17 overall career record.

In the past two seasons, Perkins has come in games in the late innings for save opportunities. In 2011-12, he had 16 saves.
