The Gophers signed a surprise commit on National Signing Day, with De’Vondre Campbell, a top junior college linebacker in the 2013 class.

Campbell chose Jerry Kill’s squad over Kansas State, Texas, and Tennessee.  Prior to announcing, Campbell was committed to the Wildcats.  In the end, Minnesota linebacker coach Phil Miller snagged Campbell’s commitment.

The three-star recruit opted to get out of the state of Kansas.  The Hutchinson Junior College player ranked 80th in the nation in the recruiting ranks.  He visited the Twin Cities back in mid-December. Soon after his visit, he visited and committed to Kansas State.

This is Minnesota’s 16th player to sign his letter of intent.  The Gophers coaching staff are waiting for four more commitments today.

Campbell has the speed of an outside linebacker, but he has the awareness of a middle linebacker.  He has three years of eligibility left.
