Familiarity with Gopher commits could draw Schilling to Minnesota

Three-star recruit Gavin Schilling will make his college announcement at 2:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday.

Schilling, a power forward for Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev., will decide between four schools he noted a month ago as his finalists.

The schools include Villanova, Michigan State, UCLA and Minnesota. All four teams are in the NCAA Tournament.

Earlier reports this week suggests Schilling is leaning towards becoming a Spartan but the Gophers should still consider themselves in the mix because of Schilling’s friendship with both Class of 2013 recruits Alvin Ellis and Alex Foster.

Ellis, a small forward from Chicago, plays at De La Salle, the school Schilling used to play for.

Minnesota’s second 2013 recruit, Alex Foster of Seton Academy in Chicago, was also a De La Salle star before transferring. Foster played with Schilling at De La Salle and their friendship is well known.

Is the friendship strong enough to bring Schilling to Minnesota? We will find out, but one thing is certain. If Schilling does choose Michigan State, at least all three will play against each other once a year.

Schilling’s decision to make the announcement on Wednesday was before UCLA was matched up with Minnesota in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. So unfortunately for some fans who would have liked to see the Bruins and Gophers play for Schilling, it doesn’t appear like that’s going to happen.
