The Gopher women’s basketball team is off to a great start this year at 4-1, thanks to redshirt freshman Amanda Zahui, who was named the Big Ten’s Player and Freshman of the Week on Monday.

The 6-foot-5 Swedish center averaged 13.5 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots this past week, which included Minnesota’s first triple-double in more than nine years and only the fourth triple-double in program history in a victory over Kansas last Wednesday.

Zahui sat out the first game of the season against Northern Illinois for violating an undisclosed NCAA rule, but in her four game career as a Gopher, she’s already broken a 32-year-old record for most blocks in a game by recording 10 blocks as part of her triple-double.

On Sunday in a win over Navy, Zahui got her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

The Gophers will host Loyola at Williams Arena on Tuesday night with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
