News from multiple outlets reported earlier today that Gopher men’s basketball forward Trevor Mbakwe, who has seen his fair share of legal trouble in the last few years, was arrested over the summer by Minnetonka PD and plead guilty to a DWI charge on September 10.
The senior, who tore his ACL early in the season last year, turned down a chance to enter the NBA draft to play a sixth year after he was granted a medical hardship waiver by the NCAA.
Mbakwe, who is no-doubt the most important piece on Tubby Smith’s team this upcoming season, also redshirted the 2009-2010 season while waiting for a decision on charges filed against him for aggravated battery, which were later dropped.
The latest legal trouble won’t have any affect on his playing status, Mbakwe reassured a Star Tribune reporter today, but in an unrelated report from today indicated that he will start the season coming off the bench.
