Gopher wrestlers tackle Illinois, 18-14

The Gopher wrestling team continued its impressive streak of conference wins with an 18-14 victory over the Fighting Illini Monday night at the Sports Pavilion.

With the victory, Minnesota is 5-0 in the conference and 11-1 overall.

Illinois won in the 125 and 133 lbs bouts to move ahead to a 7-0 lead but the Minnesota heavy weights steered the Gophers towards the victory, winning in all the weights above 174 lbs.

The dual, featured on the Big Ten Network, saw an exciting match at 197 lbs as Minnesota’s Scott Schiller pulled out a win over Mario Gonzalez to give the Gophers a lead that would carry into Tony Nelson’s heavy weight victory over Chris Lopez to seal the win.

Minnesota will host Iowa at Williams Arena next Saturday.
