The Gophers picked up its first recruit of 2014 on Saturday with Minneapolis Washburn running back Jeff Jones.

The four-star running back announced his decision publicly on Minnesota’s junior day.  Jones is currently listed in the Rivals Top-250 for 2014.

Jones rushed for back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons for Minneapolis Washburn.  He averaged over nine yards per carry and combined for 40 touchdowns during his sophomore and junior seasons.

Minnesota has not had a 1,000 yard rusher since Amir Pinnix in 2006.  Donnell Kirkwood finished with 926 rushing yards in 2012.

The inclusion of Jones gives the Gophers a depth chart full of athletic running backs.  When Jones makes it to campus, Kirkwood will be a senior.  The lone running back in the class of 2013 is Michigan’s Berkley Edwards.

Jones mulled over offers from schools including Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Iowa.

National Signing Day for the class of 2013 is Thursday.  The Gophers currently have 16 commits and are looking to add three more.  None of the commitments are higher than a three-star.
