Eagan, Minn. native Joey King signed a tender to play for the Golden Gophers on Tuesday after transferring from Drake University.
The Class of 2012 recruit was named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team last year after averaging 6.9 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest for the Drake Bulldogs.
King will seek a waiver from the NCAA to play right away for the Gophers.
Since Richard Pitino took the helm as head coach of Minnesota basketball, he has brought in four players, including King. Deandre Mathieu, Daquein McNeil and Mailk Smith are the three other players that will be new to playing in Williams Arena come November.
- Former Gopher power forward Trevor Mbakwe had a workout with Indiana Pacers on Tuesday. He has three more workouts scheduled before the June 27 NBA Draft.
- Rachel Banham underwent surgery for patellar tendonitis in both of her knees this week, according to Gopher women’s basketball head coach Pam Borton. The surgery was a success and the junior guard is not expected to miss any playing time. She averaged more than 20 points per game last season while scoring 30 or more points five times.
