Junior linebacker Lamonte Edwards has been kicked off the Gopher football team after being arrested earlier this month.

The university said Edwards violated team policy, resulting in his dismissal. He allegedly stole a cell phone from a weight room in the school’s athletic building on June 18.

On that morning, a 19-year-old Gopher women’s gymnast reported to police that her iPhone had been stolen. By using Apple’s iCould, the police were able to track the cell phone to Edwards’ home. There at his residence, Edwards admitted to taking the phone.

Edwards was a big-name recruit in the Class of 2010 from Woodbury High School. A four-star recruit, he had offers from Wisconsin, Iowa and UAB.
