Carlos Morris adds to a solid Gophers’ recruiting class

Three-star basketball recruit Carlos Morris gave his commitment to the Gophers men’s basketball team over the weekend and will be Minnesota’s third commit in the Class of 2014. He’ll join Nate Mason and Josh Martin in Richard Pitino’s first recruiting class.

Carlos Morris, a JUCO transfer, is currently playing college basketball at Chipola College. He’s a 6-foot-5 wing who was the second leading scorer on his team, averaging 13.3 points a game. He will be a junior when he starts at Minnesota next year.

Morris’s physical presence is his most desirable asset. His long build and athleticism gives him defensive versatility. He’s quick enough to stick with guards on the wing but also long enough to put up a fight in the paint, which also makes him an effective rebounder.

Offensively, Morris uses his length to get where he wants to be on the floor. He’s able to create space and score on many levels and has a very fluent jump shot that can connect from behind the arc.

I expect Morris to be a very effective asset in Pitino’s system. He’s got all the skill sets necessary and will be a perfect replacement for Austin Hollins, who graduates this year.

A few days before the 2013-14 season tips off, Pitino’s future class is shaping up nicely. With Mason as the point guard and Martin as a big and physical body in the front court, Morris is a perfect addition.

And with one more scholarship, all eyes now turn to big Minnesota recruits Rashad Vaughn and Reid Travis.
