The Gophers are in Hawaii for the Maui Invitational this week with a first round match up against the No. 9 Syracuse Orange on Monday afternoon.
Both teams are undefeated at this point in the season but the game on Monday will be the first time each team has played an opponent that’s not a mid-major program.
This will be the second time the two schools have played each other — the first time was in March of 1990. Minnesota won that game, 82-75, which led to the Gophers’ first ever Elite Eight appearance.
It will also be the first time Richard Pitino has faced an ACC opponent. Interestingly, Pitino’s father, Rick, was an assistant for Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim from 1976-78.
Including the Orange, the Gophers will play three games in the Maui Invitational. The second round game will either be against Arkansas or California while the third game is to be determined.
